Ok so for those of you who don't know this (which I am guessing is about 90% of you) I am a huge nerd. Like I am even on a robotics team. But even though people are constantly surprised at how normal and un-nerdy I can occasionally seem, I still have my nerdy moments and some really nerdy things that I am so passionate about. Here are a few of them that I think about way too often.
Ok so the first thing is, have you ever thought about how you don't know what color other people are seeing? Let me explain. There is know way of knowing what another person perceives to be red, for example. You have both grown up with people pointing at that color, whatever you see, and calling it red and giving it adjectives like warm or whatever. You could in fact be seeing my blue and calling it red. The English language isn't developed enough to give us a way to describe color in a way that is not just spouting the words we have all been taught to associate with what is called "red." Science also lacks a way to project the way one person's brain perceives a certain color, so there is currently no way of knowing if we do in fact have the same red. You're welcome for getting you to never stop thinking about this.
The other thing is even more nerdy, believe it or not, because it involves aliens. Don't let me lose you right there, keep reading. It isn't some crazy theory about green E.T. creatures or whatever. This is actually more about communication. See the thing is, a lot of people assume that if there are aliens and if there ever is a situation where we have the opportunity to communicate with said aliens (a lot of ifs, but stay with me) that they would somehow know English and understand us perfectly. Now think about this. HOW WOULD THAT HAPPEN?! Because it is most likely that they would have been living in a completely different environment with different things that we have never experienced (which is most likely), let's assume that. Even if they did have a developed language, translating would not be as simple as just translating from English to French. They would probably not have experienced the same things we have. Therefore, they wouldn't have words for things we have words for, and vice versa. There would literally be no way to translate because we wouldn't be able to relate in any way. Even if they were the exact same species and living in an identical environment and have been through the same experiences and developments as we have (how unlikely is that), what are the chances that they just happened to make the same sequence of sounds to describe the exact same thing? Like how unlikely is it that they just so happened to make the "dog" sound when the saw a dog? Considering that they even have dogs where they are and everything? I will tell you how unlikely it is -- VERY.
So yeah. Just some thoughts that plague me every day of my life for no reason that drive me crazy because there is no solution. Enjoy being plagued by them too, or just be indifferent (which is probably the better option for your mental health). That's all.
