The Class that Shouldn't Be Taught
This post is about my opinions on religion class. I know you are probably thinking, that's such a random topic what the heck? But in my life at least, this isn't such a random topic. As someone who has gone to a Catholic school my whole life, this is something that has always been a part of my life. But recently, I have been having a few problems with taking this class. Not because I don't like having to learn about another religion, because I am Catholic. Not even as a less classes/less school sort of view point. Recently, I have been noticing in my religion class that everything that is said is said as an authoritative fact. Like, "God loves you," "Jesus did this exactly for this" and stuff like that. This really unnerves me because I think religion should be all about personal beliefs and standards. Religion is a completely individual things. Only you can decide what you believe or if you want to believe in any higher power. To present aspects of a religion's beliefs as cold hard facts is completely not ok. It is not a fact. It is a belief. All of it. This just really aggravates me because that should not be how religion is presented. I don't know. I just feel like if you have to grade students on religion, you could at least present it in a way like "The catholic church believes that..." rather than "It is a fact that..." You would think after being on this earth for so long and seeing all the wars and problems caused by religion that humans would learn to handle the subject more carefully.
